Event Description
The pilot reported that approximately 200 feet above ground level during the initial climb after takeoff, the left engine experienced a complete power loss. The pilot stated that the left propeller was feathered, but the aircraft could not maintain altitude at the recommended single-engine speed while executing a gradual turn back toward the airport. This necessitated an attempt to perform a forced landing on a paved road. After touchdown, the aircraft departed the hard surface, crossed an embankment, and came to rest in a field.
Investigation Findings
Investigation into the incident revealed no malfunction or failure in the left engine. However, it was found that the left propeller control was set to high pitch rather than the feathered position. Additionally, the fuel selectors were positioned to the auxiliary tanks, which is contrary to the aircraft flight manual instructions. The pilot stated that he switched both engines to the auxiliary tanks during the attempt to recover power.
Manufacturer Statement
The aircraft manufacturer noted that taking off on the auxiliary tanks with 10 gallons can cause the engine feed port to become unporting, potentially leading to fuel starvation.
