Accident Summary
During a departure from a small private airstrip measuring 2000 feet in length, the pilot reported that the engine appeared to lose power. The aircraft subsequently failed to climb and collided with a tree at the departure end of the runway. It then struck several additional trees before impacting the ground.
Pilot Statements
In a written statement, the pilot indicated that the aircraft lifted off at 80 knots. However, in a verbal statement, he claimed to have lifted off at 40 knots. The pilot's handbook specifies a maximum performance climb speed of 72 knots and states that the landing gear should be retracted only after obstacles have been cleared.
Witness Accounts
Witnesses observed that after lift-off, the aircraft leveled off at an altitude of approximately 10 to 15 feet above ground level. It continued straight ahead without any attempt to avoid the trees, despite clear areas on both sides of the flight path. One witness also reported that the landing gear began retracting just after lift-off.
Post-Crash Examination
A post-crash run of the engine revealed no evidence of any precrash mechanical failure or malfunction. The engine operated normally during the test.
Probable Cause
The investigation did not identify a specific probable cause.
