What happened
During an agricultural flight, the pilot reported that the aircraft engine began to sputter. Unable to maintain altitude or continue the mission, the pilot executed a forced landing in a wheat field. The impact resulted in significant structural damage; the left main landing gear collapsed, and the left wing struck the ground.
The investigation
Post-accident examination of the aircraft revealed the root cause of the engine failure. A mechanic drained approximately half a pop can of water from the fuel sump. Investigation into the refueling process showed that the aircraft had been fueled from an unfiltered five-gallon container. This container had been left uncovered and exposed to rain prior to use, allowing moisture to enter the fuel supply.
Findings
The accident was caused by water contamination in the fuel system. The presence of water prevented proper combustion, leading to engine power loss. Contributing factors included the use of an unfiltered fuel source and the improper storage of the fuel container, which allowed rainwater to mix with the aviation fuel.
