Incident Summary
Shortly after takeoff, the pilot received an advisory about a model aircraft in the flight path. The pilot took evasive action, but the presence of the model aircraft was not confirmed. A passenger on board did not see the reported model aircraft. Subsequent checks with a model airport revealed that no model aircraft were being flown at the time of the incident.
Sequence of Events
Following the advisory, the pilot reduced engine power below the recommended RPM. This caused the aircraft to settle. The pilot then applied power to avoid a collision with trees. When it appeared that the aircraft was going to crash, the pilot reduced power again, causing the aircraft to stall. The aircraft subsequently collided with trees.
Investigation Findings
A high ridge located at the far end of the runway, approximately 300 feet above runway level, was noted. The pilot had reduced power on takeoff after raising the landing gear to a power setting below that specified in the flight operating specifications.
