Event Description
A certified flight instructor (CFI) reported that during a training flight, the aircraft became airborne approximately two-thirds of the way down a 3,000-foot gravel and dirt runway. At the moment of liftoff, or slightly before or after, the student pilot extended the flaps to the full position. Up to that point, the student had been in control of the airplane, with only minor corrections from the CFI.
Sequence of Events
Following takeoff, the aircraft achieved a slow climb to an estimated altitude of 50 to 100 feet above ground level (AGL). At this stage, the CFI assumed control of the airplane. Subsequently, the student pilot retracted all flaps. After the flap retraction, the aircraft settled and came to rest in a plowed field located off the end of the runway.
