Accident Details
At the completion of a banner towing flight, the banner was released and a climbing right turn to downwind was initiated. While on the downwind leg, a loss of power occurred. Unable to return to the airport for landing, the pilot executed a forced landing in a wooded area.
Investigation Findings
Investigators recovered the wreckage and measured the remaining fuel: 1.5 gallons were found in the right tank and 8.5 gallons in the left tank. According to the pilot, approximately 10 minutes before dropping the banner, he had intentionally run the right tank dry. The left tank was then selected for the remainder of the flight. No mechanical malfunctions were discovered; the engine was successfully test run after recovery of the wreckage.
