Incident Overview
An aircraft experienced an engine failure and was forced to land in a pasture, where it collided with a cow. The pilot reported that during the flight, the landing gear in-transit light illuminated at approximately 10-minute intervals. During the preflight inspection, the pilot observed red fluid dripping from the bottom of the right wing.
Landing Gear Malfunction
Upon arrival at the destination, the landing gear would not extend. The in-transit light came on, but the gear-down indication did not activate. The pilot attempted to use the emergency extension system but was unable to open the cover. He made a radio call seeking assistance on how to open the emergency gear extension valve cover. While circling, the aircraft ran out of fuel.
Post-Accident Examination
Examination after the accident revealed a leak in the right gear actuator. The hydraulic reservoir was nearly empty, preventing the pump from building sufficient pressure to extend the landing gear. The 'O' ring was found unseated in the right actuator. The emergency gear extension valve cover was opened without difficulty after the accident.
