Accident Overview
An aircraft crashed short of the runway after both engines lost power while on the base leg of the approach. The aircraft struck the ground approximately 200 feet short of the runway, slid through a fence, and came to rest on the runway, destroying about four runway lights in the process.
Investigation Findings
Post-accident investigation disclosed that the left fuel strainer drain was open. Only about one cup of fuel remained in the aircraft's fuel system. The pilot reported that the aircraft had 5 hours of fuel on board at takeoff for a 3-hour flight, but indicated that the fuel gauge was not functioning properly.
Additional Observations
Upon arrival, police found two open beer cans on the cockpit floor. No toxicology examination was conducted.
