Flight History
The aircraft was operating under instrument flight rules (IFR) on a flight from Laramie, Wyoming to Grand Junction, Colorado. While passing near Meeker, Colorado, the pilot experienced an apparent malfunction of the instrument gyro system.
Initial Deviation and Vectoring
Following the gyro problem, the aircraft deviated from its assigned IFR route. Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) personnel noted the deviation and provided vectors to return the aircraft to its correct course. The pilot complied with these vectors, and the aircraft was re-established on course.
Second Deviation and Loss of Control
Shortly after being vectored back, the aircraft deviated from course a second time. The pilot subsequently lost control of the aircraft. Radar contact was lost at this time.
