Incident Overview
An overrun occurred on a 2,000-foot airstrip when an aircraft touched down with excess approach and landing speed. The grass runway had a light coating of snow, and the pilot had neglected to raise the flaps, which contributed to a longer landing roll and less effective braking. A 5-knot tailwind was also present at the time.
Sequence of Events
After touchdown, the pilot was unable to abort the landing due to obstacles at the departure end of the runway. The aircraft rolled past the end of the runway and struck an embankment at a slow speed.
Contributing Factors
The investigation noted that the overrun resulted from the combination of excess speed, the unretracted flaps, the tailwind, and the snow-covered surface. The pilot's failure to raise the flaps extended the landing distance and reduced braking effectiveness.
