Incident Overview
A pilot conducted a takeoff with the right fuel tank intentionally run empty, having switched to the left tank, which was between one-half and three-quarters full. During the landing approach, the pilot maintained a left side slip to compensate for crosswind conditions. At 400 feet above ground level, the pilot noticed a power loss. Unable to glide to the runway, the pilot executed a forced landing in a plowed field.
Fuel System Considerations
Individuals knowledgeable about the aircraft stated that the engine will quit if the fuel tank corresponding to the direction of the side slip is not full. This type of failure occurs due to the fuel tank outlet line becoming unported, which allows air to enter the fuel system.
Conclusion
The forced landing was necessitated by the loss of engine power during the approach. The power loss was a result of the fuel system allowing air to enter, as the outlet line became unported due to the side slip condition and the fuel level in the active tank.
