Incident Overview
A pilot elected to land short of the original destination due to deteriorating weather conditions. Vectors were provided for an instrument landing system (ILS) approach to runway 35R at Abilene, Texas.
Approach Sequence
During the night approach, the pilot reported strong gusty winds, severe turbulence, and restricted visibility. At least once, the airspeed dropped 20 knots, which the pilot noted as indicating wind shear. While contacting the tower, the pilot briefly observed the airport lights and initiated a gentle turn to correct to the localizer. Shortly after being cleared for the ILS approach and landing, the aircraft impacted the ground while still south of the outer marker.
Weather Conditions
Prior to the flight, the pilot had obtained a weather briefing and was warned of widespread cloud cover, gusty winds, and wind shear associated with a passing frontal system.
