Accident Overview
A private pilot and their instructor were practicing instrument approaches when they decided to conduct a straight-in landing. The instructor reported that the fuel gauges were reading low and the VOR needle was oscillating, leading to the decision to land. After lowering the landing gear and flaps, the aircraft touched down. During the landing roll, the main landing gear folded, while the nose gear remained locked in the down position.
Sequence of Events
The flight was engaged in instrument approach practice. According to the instructor, the fuel gauges indicated low fuel levels, and the VOR needle exhibited oscillation. Consequently, the crew opted for a straight-in landing. They extended the landing gear and flaps before touchdown. Upon landing, the main landing gear collapsed, but the nose gear stayed extended and locked.
Post-Accident Examination
After the aircraft was jacked up, an operational check of the landing gear system was performed. Both the landing gear and the electrical system functioned normally during the check. The instructor stated that he could not definitively confirm having observed a gear down and locked indication prior to landing.
