Accident Sequence
According to the pilot and ground witnesses, the aircraft touched down at or beyond midfield at an excessive speed. The landing roll continued beyond the runway, and the aircraft exited into a soft dirt area west of the departure end of the runway. Upon entering the dirt area, the nose gear sank, causing the aircraft to begin nosing over. During the nose-over sequence, the aircraft struck an airport boundary fence and came to rest inverted on Dale Street, aligned with the extended centerline of Runway 24.
Runway and Environment
Runway 24 is equipped with a two-bar visual approach slope indicator (VASI) and has a landing distance of 2,858 feet. Surface winds were reported as 200 degrees at 4 knots.
Aircraft Examination
Examination of the aircraft disclosed that the flaps were in the approach position. Both main landing gear tires exhibited several flat-spotted areas. Both brake discs showed evidence of overheating. The brake system was tested and operated normally. Tire marks were observed beginning approximately 1,000 feet east of the departure end of the runway and continued to the main wreckage area.
