Approach and Collision
During an arrival, the pilot began an instrument landing system (ILS) approach to Runway 13 at Hutchinson Municipal Airport. The pilot reported that after turning off the 16-mile arc, he intercepted the localizer and started a descent to the published minimum altitude to cross the outer marker, which serves as the final approach fix. Just prior to reaching the outer marker, the aircraft struck the top two static wires of a power line and subsequently impacted the ground.
Post-Accident Examination
Following the accident, an examination of the aircraft revealed that the altimeter was indicating 8,400 feet. The instrument was taken to a repair station for a teardown inspection, but by that time it read -3,500 feet. A disassembly and examination of the altimeter was performed; however, its pre-impact condition and its readout at the moment of impact could not be determined.
