Accident Sequence
During a training flight, after one hour of airwork, the instructor and student pilot returned to the airport to practice a short field landing. According to the instructor, the student lowered the landing gear while on the downwind leg. Both pilots verified the gear position indicator on base leg and again on final approach; on each check, the indicator showed the gear was down and locked.
As the aircraft entered the flare, the gear warning horn sounded. The instructor then observed that the gear indicator now displayed an up position. The instructor advanced the engine power, but the aircraft settled onto the runway and came to a stop straight ahead.
Post-Accident Examination
Following the accident, the landing gear components were examined. No malfunctions could be found in the gear system.
Findings
The investigation did not determine a cause for the gear retraction. The gear indicator and warning system functioned as designed during the checks, and the subsequent examination revealed no mechanical anomalies.
