Preflight and Icing Information
According to the pilot, no icing pilot reports (PIREPs) or significant meteorological information (SIGMETs) were received during his preflight weather briefing. However, the National Weather Service (NWS) briefer stated that he informed the pilot of one PIREP and one SIGMET concerning icing that affected his proposed route of flight.
En Route Diversion and Ice Accumulation
En route to his destination, the pilot had to divert due to low ceilings. He then began to notice ice accumulating on his wings as he flew through heavy rain. The pilot initiated an instrument approach with a buildup of ice approximately one inch thick.
Approach and Stall
As the icing increased, the pilot used full power to maintain a safe speed margin. Over the approach lights, he reduced power slightly and lowered the landing gear. The airspeed dropped rapidly, and the left wing stalled. Subsequently, the aircraft impacted a snow bank approximately 40 feet short of the runway. The aircraft was damaged in the event.
Post-Accident Examination
An examination of the aircraft revealed a one-inch thick layer of mixed rime and clear ice on the leading edges of the wings and tail surfaces.
