Accident Overview
A pilot reported that during the arrival phase of a flight, after completing a full landing check and applying carburetor heat, the engine suddenly ceased operating when power was reduced to between 1900 and 2000 RPM. The pilot attempted to restart the engine but was unsuccessful.
Emergency Landing
Facing a loss of engine power, the pilot selected an open field for an emergency landing. During the landing, the left wing struck small trees and the right wing contacted mud and snow. The aircraft subsequently skidded on the mud and snow, sustaining damage that rendered it beyond economical repair.
Post-Accident Examination
An examination of the aircraft was conducted. No preimpact part failure or malfunction was found. The carburetor heat assembly was severely damaged by impact forces. Notably, the left fuel cap was found not to be vented, although no obstructions were reported for the other vents associated with that tank.
Regulatory Compliance
Airworthiness Directive AD-79-14 required that both fuel caps be vented in accordance with Cessna Service Letter SE 77-6. The left fuel cap's lack of venting was noted during the investigation.
