Incident Overview
The aircraft, N3354F, was involved in a landing accident at Jefferson County Airport. The pilot had contacted the airport office (UNICOM) and was advised that runway 15/33 was closed. Around the time of arrival, a military helicopter landed on runway 27.
Pilot Actions
The pilot asked a passenger to observe the wind sock, and she reported it was 'flying west.' The pilot elected to land on runway 27, which had a 533-foot displaced threshold and a downhill grade of 1.52%.
Landing and Sequence of Events
Witnesses reported that the aircraft was fast on final approach and landed long. Subsequently, it went off the right side of the runway near the departure end, hit a runway light, and continued across rough terrain. The pilot applied power, and the aircraft became airborne at the edge of a wide gully area. It then settled and impacted a dirt bank after crossing the gully.
Physical Evidence
Skid marks from the aircraft were found starting about 1,366 feet from the departure end of the runway and continued until the aircraft left the runway.
Weather Conditions
At nearby Jeffco Airport, the wind at 1145 MST was from 140 degrees at 14 knots. The density altitude at the crash site was approximately 6,100 feet.
