Accident Overview
An aircraft climbing shortly after takeoff suffered a loss of engine power, forcing the pilot to perform a landing that resulted in substantial damage to the aircraft.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported that the engine coughed and lost power. When the throttle was pumped, power temporarily returned. However, moving the throttle to the full open position caused another loss of power.
Post-Accident Inspection
Examination of the aircraft and engine after the accident uncovered several issues. The fuel primer was found unlocked and slightly pulled back. Multiple spark plugs were covered with soot, and the inside of the exhaust pipe also showed soot buildup. A fuel sample taken from the aircraft was brown in color and contained water contamination.
Engine Test
After repairing damage sustained in the accident and replacing a worn start clutch, the engine was started and operated normally, indicating that the contamination and primer issue were likely responsible for the power loss.
