Incident Sequence
Following a normal takeoff, the aircraft entered the initial climb phase. At that point, the pilot activated the landing gear retraction control. The landing gear system, however, did not respond; the retraction mechanism remained inactive, and the cockpit gear position indicators showed no change. The pilot then initiated troubleshooting procedures.
Low Pass and Landing
To verify the landing gear status, the pilot coordinated with the control tower to perform a low pass. As the aircraft flew past the tower, air traffic controllers visually observed the landing gear. According to the controllers, the landing gear appeared to be extended. Believing the gear to be down, the pilot proceeded to land.
During the landing touchdown, the landing gear structure failed. Specifically, all three main landing gear struts collapsed. The aircraft subsequently came to a stop on its belly.
Investigation Findings
An official investigation was launched to identify the cause of the landing gear collapse. Investigators examined the landing gear system, including the retraction mechanism, indicators, and structural components. However, despite comprehensive testing and analysis, no definitive reason for the collapse could be ascertained. The investigation concluded that the cause of the gear collapse remained undetermined.
