Incident Overview
A flight from Reno, Nevada, to Phoenix, Arizona, encountered a partial power loss in the left engine while climbing through 15,000 feet, with an outside air temperature of -15 degrees Celsius. The fuel selectors could not be moved, prompting the pilot to reduce power on the right engine and descend. The left engine continued to run roughly, leading the pilot to divert and land at Death Valley Airport.
Post-Landing Actions
Approximately half an hour after landing, the fuel selector became movable. The pilot drained the fuel tanks until both engines ran smoothly. He then boarded his passengers and started both engines. During taxi for takeoff, the left engine lost power and would not restart. The passengers deplaned, and the pilot proceeded to make a single-engine takeoff.
Takeoff and Impact
After becoming airborne, the aircraft climbed briefly and then began a left turn. After turning approximately 130 degrees, the aircraft impacted the ground between two sand dunes.
Findings
Subsequent inspection revealed water in the left engine servo and the right main fuel sump. A small amount of water mixed with fuel was found in the main tanks.
