Event Description
The aircraft had just undergone a top overhaul of its engine, and a STOL kit was added. The mechanic reportedly instructed the pilot to be 'easy' on the engine and to fly the aircraft near the traffic pattern for 45 to 60 minutes to allow checking for oil leaks. The pilot reportedly ignored these instructions, left the traffic pattern, and was seen performing abrupt climbing and descending maneuvers. A witness reported seeing the aircraft several miles from the airport trailing thin white smoke shortly before the engine stopped. The aircraft then made a steep left turn and lost altitude quickly, impacting trees.
Investigation Findings
On-scene investigation revealed that the landing gear and flaps were in the full extended position. A negligible amount of oil was present in the engine, and no evidence of an oil leak was found. The engine teardown revealed evidence of oil starvation.
Engine Teardown Details
During the teardown, two holes were found worn in the oil pressure line to the turbocharger. However, because the internal Teflon liner was transformed to ashes by the intense post-crash fire, it could not be determined if the holes were worn through the internal liner.
