Incident Summary
A cruise flight over hilly terrain experienced an unexpected power loss. The pilot described the engine as 'dying back and then catching again.' Unable to maintain altitude, the pilot selected a field for a forced landing.
Sequence of Events
During the approach to the selected field, the left main landing gear and propeller struck two power lines. The power lines broke, and the aircraft continued flying. However, during the landing, the left main gear collapsed, causing the aircraft to swerve and sustain additional damage.
Investigation Findings
Examination of the fuel tank revealed that the coating inside the tank had begun flaking. These flakes had partially obstructed a fuel screen, which likely contributed to the power loss.
