Incident Overview
During the takeoff roll at Lakeland, Florida, the left main wheel assembly separated from the aircraft. The loose wheel struck the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer, inflicting substantial damage. The pilot was initially unaware of the wheel separation and continued the takeoff until notified by air traffic control.
Pilot Actions After Notification
Upon learning of the situation, the pilot diverted the flight to Tampa. To verify the condition of the landing gear, the pilot performed two low passes over the airport. After confirming the left main wheel was missing, the pilot made the decision to land with the landing gear retracted on Runway 27.
Examination and Cause
A subsequent examination of the aircraft revealed that the outer wheel bearing had failed. This bearing failure permitted the left main wheel assembly to separate from the axle during the takeoff.
