Accident Overview
An aircraft struck trees and crashed after overflying Mercer County Airport on a special VFR clearance. The accident occurred at 2130 EDT on an unspecified date.
Sequence of Events
The aircraft had descended to 900 feet to overfly Mercer and was attempting to proceed under visual flight rules (VFR) to Princeton Airport for landing when it made contact with trees and crashed. Weather conditions at the accident site and at Mercer County Airport at the time of the accident were instrument meteorological conditions (IMC).
Pilot Communications
The pilot was in radio and visual contact with Mercer County Airport after an instrument landing system (ILS) approach and had been cleared for a full-stop landing. However, the pilot requested to overfly and proceed to Princeton. The pilot was advised that the airport was IFR and that landing was required because the tower could not approve the flight plan. The pilot subsequently requested a special VFR departure out of the control zone, which was granted at 2114 EDT. The pilot reported being clear of the control zone at 2116 EDT.
Accident
The crash occurred at 2130 EDT. The aircraft collided with trees and was destroyed.
