Narrative
Approximately 10 minutes after takeoff, the aircraft experienced an engine sputter followed by a complete loss of power, leading to a forced landing that resulted in damage. The pilot reported a normal takeoff with cowl flaps open and mixture set to rich. After climbing about 1,100 feet to 3,500 feet MSL, the pilot closed the cowl flaps and leaned the mixture slightly.
About two to three minutes later, the engine began sputtering. The pilot observed the oil temperature rising. In response, the pilot opened the cowl flaps, turned on carburetor heat, changed the fuel selector, and checked the magnetos. Despite these actions, the engine lost all power. The pilot attempted to land on a road but maneuvered to avoid power lines and elected to land in a field. During the approach, the aircraft struck a fence and sustained damage.
Findings
Examination revealed a lack of fuel in the fuel line leading to the carburetor. The aircraft had been refueled with 37 gallons of unleaded automotive fuel. The ambient air temperature was reported as 85 degrees Fahrenheit. No pre-accident mechanical problem was found that would have caused a loss of power, vapor lock, or other engine or fuel system issue. The wobble pump was not used while the pilot was attempting to restore power.
