Incident Overview
An aircraft landed long and fast on a relatively short, sloping runway, according to the investigation. The pilot attempted to recover after the aircraft bounced four times, but the subsequent climb led to a stall and collision with a hospital dormitory.
Sequence of Events
The landing was described as long and fast on a runway that was both short and sloped. After four bounces, the pilot rapidly added throttle on the turbocharger-equipped aircraft and attempted to climb. Witnesses observed smoke coming from the exhaust and reported that the aircraft assumed a high pitch attitude with low airspeed. The aircraft narrowly cleared a roadside parking area situated on a hill off the departure end of the runway.
Following the clearance, the aircraft entered a stall and post-stall gyration, ultimately colliding with the stressed concrete roof of a women's dormitory at Central State Hospital. A fire erupted upon impact.
Aftermath
Four patients at the hospital sustained injuries. Both aircraft occupants sustained fatal injuries. The aircraft was destroyed in the accident and subsequent fire.
Investigation
A teardown examination of the aircraft revealed no mechanical malfunction. The investigation focused on the landing and subsequent pilot actions but did not state a probable cause for the accident.
