Event Summary
While a student pilot was nearing completion of a solo cross-country flight, the engine ceased operation. The pilot selected an open area for a forced landing but overshot the intended touchdown point. The aircraft subsequently crashed in the backyard of a single-family dwelling.
Investigation Findings
An investigation into the accident did not disclose any system malfunction or failure. Examination of the fuel system revealed that only about 3 quarts of fuel remained in the left tank. The right fuel tank was damaged during the accident, preventing verification of the amount of fuel it contained.
According to the airport manager, the aircraft should have had an endurance of 5 hours at normal power settings. The crash occurred approximately 4.3 hours after takeoff.
