Flight Details
A pilot was flying for pleasure when noticing a slight fluctuation in the left engine's fuel pressure. This observation prompted recollection of a similar event involving the right engine, which had been traced to a leaking fuel line. Suspecting a fuel leak in the left engine and fearing the risk of fire, the pilot decided to perform an immediate precautionary landing.
Landing Site Selection
Scouting for a suitable landing area, the pilot selected the first observed location that appeared appropriate. This was an uncharted dirt airstrip with a length of 1300 feet.
Landing and Gear Collapse
As the aircraft flew short final approach to the airstrip, gusty wind conditions were encountered. The aircraft then dropped, resulting in a hard touchdown. The force of the impact caused both main landing gear to collapse. The aircraft came to rest with both main landing gear collapsed.
