A pilot performing a max performance takeoff on a 2500-ft sod runway aborted after sluggish acceleration, but could not stop before the aircraft departed the runway into a dirt embankment.

Narrative

According to the pilot, he planned to use maximum performance takeoff procedures from the owner's manual for the takeoff. After brake release, the aircraft began to roll down the sod runway. Acceleration continued, but the pilot reported that his airspeed increase seemed sluggish. At 60 mph and three-quarters of the way down the runway, he began abort procedures. Before he could get the aircraft stopped, it ran off the end of the runway and into a dirt embankment.

Environment

The accident occurred on Runway 18, which is 2500 feet long. The ambient air temperature at the time of the accident was 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pilot's Remarks

The pilot later stated that he would have liked to have used some kind of soft field takeoff, but the owner's manual only described normal and maximum performance takeoff techniques.
