A pilot conducting a test flight after a major engine overhaul experienced a power loss during a left turn. No suitable landing area was available, and the aircraft contacted trees. Post-accident inspection revealed chrome plating separation in the #5 cylinder.
Overview
During a test flight following a major engine overhaul, the pilot initiated a left turn away from the airport shortly after takeoff. Immediately thereafter, the engine lost power. With no suitable landing area within gliding distance, the pilot maneuvered the aircraft straight ahead, where it subsequently contacted trees.
Post-Accident Inspection
A post-accident inspection of the engine revealed that the chrome plating within the #5 cylinder was separating from the cylinder wall. The separated chrome was found imbedded in the ring lands of the piston. The reason for the chrome separation is unknown.
