Accident Sequence
The aircraft experienced a loss of control while on approach to the pilot's private airstrip. The flight, a pleasure flight lasting approximately one-half hour, had returned to the airport with no reported problems. On about a one-half mile final, the aircraft entered a steep left turn with a bank angle of approximately 60 degrees. The pilot attempted to correct by applying full right aileron and right rudder, which reduced the bank angle to about 15 degrees. Subsequently, the pilot elected to land on a road. During the landing attempt, the left wing collided with a guard rail, causing the aircraft to spin into a ditch.
Post-Accident Findings
After the accident, the pilot reported that the right lower tail brace wire attach fitting, Piper P/N 10075-04, had failed. The pilot also reported that a pre-existing crack was found in the fitting.
