Incident Overview
According to the pilot's report, the aircraft experienced a loss of engine power while being vectored for the initial ILS approach to Charleston, South Carolina (CHS). Attempts to regain power were unsuccessful, leading to a forced landing in a swampy field a few miles north of CHS. Upon coming to a stop, the aircraft nosed over inverted and remained in that position until it was removed from the site three days later.
Examination and Findings
Examination of the aircraft revealed approximately 6 to 8 ounces of fuel in the fuel system, with no contamination detected. A total of 4 gallons of fuel was subsequently added to the two wing tanks. The engine was then started using the aircraft battery and ran smoothly after a few seconds of roughness. It was run to full power with no defects noted. After shutdown, an examination of the fuel system revealed no leaks.
Pilot Statement
The pilot stated that the aircraft was topped off prior to departure and should have had 5 hours of fuel. The pilot reported total engine running time at 4 hours and 40 minutes.
