What happened
Witnesses present at the accident site estimated that ground visibility was extremely poor, measuring 100 yards or less at the time of the incident. The pilot, who held instrument ratings, had undertaken a flight covering 32 nautical miles. Despite possessing the necessary qualifications to navigate under such conditions, he did not file a flight plan with the appropriate authorities.
Prior to departure, the pilot had obtained a weather briefing from Flight Service Stations (FSS). However, this preparation did not prevent the aircraft from encountering the adverse weather conditions that led to the accident. The aircraft subsequently collided with steel cables strung between steel transmission line towers. Following the impact, the aircraft rolled upside down and came to rest in an inverted attitude, pitched 40 degrees nose down.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the sequence of events leading to the collision and the final resting position of the wreckage. Investigators noted the specific nature of the obstacles struck, identifying them as steel cables atop transmission towers. The physical evidence confirmed the violent nature of the impact, which caused the aircraft to invert completely.

Several critical factors contributed to this accident. The pilot failed to file a flight plan despite having obtained a weather briefing, indicating a lapse in standard operational procedures for instrument flight rules (IFR) or marginal VFR conditions. The decision to continue flying into an environment with visibility of 100 yards or less resulted in controlled flight into terrain/obstacles.
The primary causal factor was the loss of situational awareness due to weather conditions, compounded by the failure to utilize available flight planning resources. The collision with the transmission lines was a direct result of flying below minimum safe altitudes in low visibility without proper navigation aids or procedures.
