What happened
Shortly after initiating takeoff, the pilot experienced a complete loss of engine power just after rotating for flight. In response to the emergency, the pilot extended the landing gear and executed a hard landing. The impact forces from this uncontrolled touchdown were severe enough to cause a collapse of the aircraft's landing gear structure.
The investigation
A post-crash examination of the engine revealed critical mechanical failures in the ignition system. The right magneto was found to be improperly timed, preventing proper spark generation. Additionally, the left magneto was loose and free to rotate independently, rendering it non-functional. These defects combined to cause the total loss of engine power described by the pilot.
Findings
The primary causal factor was the improper timing of the right magneto and the loose installation of the left magneto. These mechanical failures directly resulted in the loss of engine power during the critical takeoff phase.
