Incident Overview
A pilot experienced engine failure approximately 2.8 hours into an instrument flight rules (IFR) flight, necessitating a forced landing on a dirt road. Post-accident examination revealed no fuel in the aircraft and continuity of the fuel system.
Preflight Fuel Considerations
The day before the accident, the pilot determined that the aircraft's takeoff weight would exceed the maximum gross weight. He requested the operator to drain 20 gallons of fuel from the tanks. An airport manager removed 15 gallons the night before the accident flight, though he did not inspect the tanks prior to defueling. A pilot who flew the aircraft earlier reported a one-hour flight and did not refuel due to a broken fuel pump at the fueling point.
Preflight Inspection
On the day of departure, the pilot performed a preflight inspection but did not use a dip stick to verify the actual fuel quantity. When the master switch was energized, the right fuel gauge read 'almost empty' and the left fuel gauge indicated 'less than one half.' The pilot stated he assumed the gauges were incorrect and proceeded with the flight under IFR conditions.
Engine Failure and Forced Landing
