Incident Overview
On an instructional flight in a Cessna 172, N72MA, an instructor pilot (CFI/CFII) and a student (private pilot, single-engine rated) were conducting instrument flight training. The student had recent instrument flight training and was using a hood. At the same time, a Cessna 206, N2544X, was inbound to DuPage Airport from the west at an altitude of 2,500 feet MSL.
Circumstances of the Collision
The Cessna 172 was proceeding generally on a southeast heading, as if to intercept the ILS Runway 10 localizer for DuPage Airport. The two aircraft converged and collided approximately 2 miles west of the outer marker/final approach fix and about 1/4 mile south of the localizer course line. The minimum altitude for the ILS approach in that area was 2,600 feet MSL until intercepting the glide slope.
Aircraft Damage and Post-Collision Events
During the collision, the nose gear of the Cessna 206 and the empennage (tail section) of the Cessna 172 made contact. The Cessna 172 went out of control and crashed in a steep descent. The Cessna 206 continued flying and was landed without its nose gear. Neither flight had requested nor were provided radar separation.
