During a student instructional flight, the engine failed to respond to throttle input on final approach, resulting in a landing short of the runway. Post-accident inspection found no mechanical failure.

Flight Sequence

A student instructional flight was conducted with a certified flight instructor (CFI) on board. During the initial run-up, the CFI observed an excessive magneto drop, which subsequently cleared. The aircraft proceeded to an adjacent airfield where two touch-and-go landings were performed. On the last takeoff, the CFI suspected a power hesitation.

Return and Pattern Work

The aircraft returned to its home base, where a magneto check was performed and found to be normal. A takeoff was initiated to remain in the traffic pattern. On the downwind leg, carburetor heat was applied and then removed. The student pilot was given a simulated engine failure exercise at the approach end of the runway.

Engine Failure on Final Approach

During the final approach, the throttle was advanced but the engine did not respond. The aircraft subsequently landed short of the runway.

Post-Accident Inspection

An inspection of the aircraft and engine failed to reveal any failure or malfunction.
