Preflight and Takeoff
Before departure, the pilot tuned in the Hayward ATIS and received Information Alpha, which reported scattered clouds at 2,200 feet, an overcast layer at 3,000 feet, and visibility of 8 miles. The pilot then took off from Runway 28R.
In-Flight Events
After climbing to approximately 650 feet, the pilot made a right turn. Around that time, the aircraft entered clouds. The pilot attempted to return to Hayward Airport but, while trying to avoid the clouds, ended up climbing to 1,600 feet. He contacted Oakland Tower and turned east toward the Oakland Hills, while avoiding controlled airspace at Alameda.
Oakland Tower personnel did not have radar contact with the aircraft and asked the pilot to change his transponder code. As the pilot was maneuvering under a cloud, the aircraft struck the tops of trees and came to rest against a light pole. The pilot estimated the crash site was approximately 7 miles northeast of Hayward Airport.
Aftermath
The source does not specify any injuries or damage beyond the aircraft hitting trees and a light pole. No probable cause was stated in the investigation summary.
