What happened
The pilot had just departed the airport and initiated a crosswind turn at an altitude of approximately 500 feet. During this climb phase, the engine began sputtering and subsequently lost power. The available altitude was insufficient to allow the aircraft to return to the departure airfield. Consequently, the pilot was forced to ditch the aircraft in the water, located approximately 200 yards off the north end of the runway.
