Event Description
During arrival, the approach to Runway 17 appeared normal until the pilot flared for landing. As the landing gear contacted the runway surface, a loud popping sound was heard. Subsequently, the left main gear collapsed, and the aircraft veered off the runway.
Investigation Findings
An examination of the aircraft revealed that the left main gear failed after striking a 6-inch lip at the approach end of the asphalt runway during touchdown. The lip was measured at 6 inches.
Regulatory Reference
According to 14 CFR 139.43, the height of a runway lip at the approach end should not exceed 3 inches.
