Event Summary
During an aerial application operation, the aircraft experienced a sudden engine failure. The cessation of engine power was determined to be caused by a broken shaft within the fuel pump.
Sequence of Events
Following the engine failure, the pilot activated the boost pump, which allowed the engine to run only momentarily. The aircraft was carrying approximately 700 pounds of dry chemical, and the pilot was unable to jettison this load. To maintain flying speed, the pilot was compelled to keep the aircraft in a nose-down attitude.
During the landing flare, the pilot raised the nose of the aircraft in an attempt to execute a normal touchdown. However, the aircraft struck the ground with significant force. After impact, the aircraft skidded for a distance of about 40 feet before nosing over into an inverted position.
Probable Cause
The accident was caused by an engine failure resulting from a broken shaft in the fuel pump.
