Overview
On an unspecified date, an aircraft departed from Runway 30 at Lee Airport in Annapolis, Maryland. The runway measures 2,400 feet in length. Beards Creek is located approximately 200 feet beyond the departure end of the runway.
Witness Observations
Witnesses reported that the engine sounded normal during the takeoff run but began to lose power shortly after the aircraft lifted off. After the power loss, the aircraft was observed making a steep 180-degree right turn over the departure end of the runway. During this turn, the right wing contacted the ground, followed by the nose of the aircraft.
Investigation Findings
Examination of the engine did not reveal any mechanical malfunctions. However, water was found in the fuel tanks during the investigation. It was also discovered that the pilot was known to frequently use automotive fuel in his aircraft. The aircraft had been approved to use unleaded automotive fuel under Supplemental Type Certificate SA802GL. The pilot's logbooks were not recovered for flight time documentation.
