Incident Overview
During a landing on runway 34, the pilot encountered winds estimated from 270 degrees at 10–15 knots. At touchdown, a gust raised the left wing, causing the aircraft to drift to the right. The pilot corrected the left-wing-high condition but observed persons approaching the runway from the right side. By the time the wing was leveled, the aircraft had drifted further right, and the right main landing gear wheel departed the paved surface.
Go-Around and Avoidance
The pilot decided to execute a go-around. During the go-around, the pilot turned the aircraft further right to avoid the personnel on the ground. Due to rising terrain ahead, the pilot was unable to climb above a treeline. When a collision with trees became imminent, the pilot reduced engine power.
Collision Sequence
The fuselage of the aircraft continued through the trees, but the wings were sheared off during the impact. The event ended with the aircraft heavily damaged.
