Accident Overview
A pilot who did not hold a pilot certificate or medical certificate conducted a flight despite lacking proper credentials. The pilot reported fueling the aircraft with the remaining fuel from a storage tank. A preflight inspection was performed prior to departure.
Sequence of Events
After takeoff, the engine lost power shortly thereafter. The pilot executed a forced landing in an alfalfa field. During the landing, the aircraft struck an irrigation ditch.
Post-Accident Comments
In the NTSB accident report, the pilot stated that the accident could have been prevented by changing the filter on the bulk tank and allowing water to settle in the tank before draining the sump and gascolator.
