Accident Overview
A private pilot had been providing aerial rides in the local area for approximately one hour. After dropping off one passenger and picking up another, the pilot taxied the aircraft from the ramp to Runway 30 and performed a normal takeoff. During the crosswind turn, the engine began to miss and backfire. The aircraft completed the downwind turn at an altitude of about 400 feet above ground level (AGL) and initiated a curving base leg to final approach. The aircraft then stalled and crashed.
Witness and Weather Observations
Witnesses reported strong, gusty winds present east and south of the airport at the time of the accident. Atmospheric conditions were conducive to carburetor ice at the time of the accident.
Post-Accident Examination
Evidence indicated that the engine was not operating at the moment of impact. However, a post-accident examination failed to disclose any mechanical failure or malfunction. The aircraft was destroyed by a post-impact fire.
