What happened
During cruise flight, the pilot experienced a total loss of engine power caused by fuel exhaustion. Air traffic control at Approach Control vectored the aircraft toward a closer airport in an attempt to facilitate a safe landing. However, the aircraft was already beyond gliding distance from the intended destination. Consequently, the aircraft collided with a house that was currently under construction.
The investigation
A post-accident inspection of the airframe and engine components revealed no fuel remaining in either wing tank. Further examination identified mechanical irregularities within the engine assembly; specifically, the fuel lines associated with cylinders #4 and #6 were found to be loose.
Findings
The primary factor leading to this accident was fuel exhaustion during cruise flight. Contributing factors included the inability of the aircraft to glide to a suitable landing site after power loss and the discovery of loose fuel lines on cylinders #4 and #6, which may have contributed to the fuel system failure or indicated maintenance issues.
Safety message
Pilots must ensure adequate fuel reserves are maintained for all phases of flight. Regular pre-flight inspections should include verification that all fuel line connections are secure and intact to prevent in-flight power loss.
