Accident Sequence
A tow plane, while towing a glider, experienced a loss of engine power during takeoff. The power loss occurred at about 50 feet above ground level. In response, the tow pilot signaled the glider pilot to release the tow line. After the release, both pilots executed landings on the remaining runway. The tow plane, after landing, skidded off the end of the runway and into trees. Simultaneously, the glider, while attempting to land, also collided with trees.
Investigative Findings
Following the accident, an investigation was conducted. It was determined that a one-inch piece of Teflon tape was obstructing the intake side of the fuel pump.
