Incident Overview
A pilot reported that while calling UNICOM for airport advisory, he heard the operator say something about "six." He interpreted that as Runway 6 being the preferred runway. However, the operator actually said Runway 16 was the preferred runway. Dillon Airport has no Runway 6. The pilot subsequently landed past the midpoint of Runway 3, which is a 3,500-foot turf strip.
Go-Around and Sequence of Events
After landing long, the pilot attempted a go-around. During the maneuver, the aircraft struck a runway marker, then went through a fence and overturned.
Aircraft Performance Considerations
The airport's density altitude was computed to be 6,135 feet. The aircraft's flight manual specifies that ground rolls of 935 feet for landing and 1,550 feet for takeoff are required.
Pilot Certification
The pilot was flying on an expired medical certificate at the time of the accident.
